چکیده

There is continuing interest in the diagnostic potentialities of the hemagglutination test for tuberculosis described by Middlebrook and Dubos in 1948 (6) and modified by Scott and Smith in 1950 (12). This test was initially described as a useful tool to aid the clinician in the diagnosis and management of tuberculosis (9, 10, 12) . Middlebrook's emphasis has been on its usefulness in studying various immunologic processes in relation to tuberculosis. In December of 1950 this hospital supplied sera from 35 lepromatous patients to Dr. Leslie C. Murphy of the Brooke Army Medical Center (8), who was employing the Middlebrook test in diseases other than tuberculosis in an effort to evaluate its specificity. He found titers varying between 1:2 to 1 :512 in the Carville sera. Results of this test in leprosy patients have also been reported by Levine et al. in 1951 and 1952 (4, 5), and by Ahuir et al. of Spain (1). In Japan (3) Tajiri, Kawaguchi, Fukuda, and Arai have also reported on the test in leprosy. The present study was made primarily in order that the results of the hemagglutination test might be recorded in a larger group of leprosy patients than has been tested heretofore. A second objective was to observe any changes in titer which might occur in a small group of patients studied repeatedly during the course of a year, in different stages of the disease process and during various treatment regimens.

An evaluation of the Maillard-Gagliardo complement fixation test in leprosy; a review of 100 cases.

The results of a modified Middlebrook-Dubos hemagglutination test in leprosy were reported recently from this laboratory (4). Old Tuberculin 4X Lederle was employed in that test to sensitize the sheep red blood cells. In a series of 261 cases it was observed that titers above those found in controls occurred in 231 cases, or 88.5 per cent. In 1951 Maillard and Gagliardo (1) described a compleme...

Hemagglutination of tuberculin sensitized sheep cells in Hansen's disease (leprosy).

The hemagglutination test of Middlebrook and Dubos (1), as modified by Scott and Smith (2), provides a relatively readily available laboratory tool for studying the serological response of patients infected with tubercle bacilli. The following brief report indicates that this technic may be especially applicable for a serological response in Hansen's disease. Materials and methods.-The technic ...

Evaluation of the Middlebrook-Dubos hemagglutination test in tuberculosis.

The hemagglutination test in the diagnosis of active tuberculosis has been the subject of considerable study since it was first described by Middlebrook and Dubos in 1948.’ Because of conflicting reports by various workers, the value of the test as a diagnostic tool has not been clearly defined. The present study was undertaken for the purpose of investigating the sensitivity and the specificit...

Specific Serum Agglutination of Erythrocytes Sensitized with Extracts of Tubercle Bacilli

A hemagglutination reaction has been described between sheep erythrocytes treated with a component of a polysaccharide fraction of mammalian tubercle bacilli and the sera of experimental animals or of tuberculous patients. Evidence has been presented for the specificity of this reaction. A modification of the test, involving an inhibition reaction, has been developed for the detection and quant...

The Specificity of the Passive Hemagglutination Methods Used in Serology of Tuberculosis

The Middlebrook-Dubos hemagglutination test with normal red cells and the Boyden hemagglutination test with red cells tanned with tannic acid were shown to be strictly specific, for tubercle polysaccharide and for the protein antigens. The former test detects polysaccharide antibodies and the latter protein antibodies. Convincing evidence is given that polysaccharide does not adhere to the surf...
